Swipe to Unlock The Primer on Technology and Business Strategy Neel Mehta Aditya Agashe Parth Detroja Books Reviews
While I love my computer science major, I realized it didn’t directly teach me anything about the tech industry what the cloud is, how Facebook designs your newsfeed, why companies acquire startups, etc. Courses were just bogged down in too much code and math to give us any big picture insights.
So I bought Swipe to Unlock and, wow, I wish we had a class where you literally read this book and nothing else. This book uses short and entertaining cases to explain operating systems, software development, big data, hacking, etc. I thought the case on how a single typo took down 20% of the internet sounded really cool, so I read it and within 5 minutes I knew more about the pros and cons of cloud computing than I had from years of coding.
I’m trying to get a job more on the business side of tech, and there’s so much good stuff here why Microsoft bought LinkedIn, why offers Prime, how apps make money, etc etc. I really feel like I’m now able to think strategically and scientifically about why tech companies make the decisions they do. (The Prime case in particular is super cool, and I couldn’t stop talking about it at lunch the other day!)
Also it’s insane just how clear and easy-to-read this book was. They have really memorable and fun ways to remember important concepts — the cloud is like Uber, the internet works like shipping hot sauce, and so on. All this without any jargon at all. These guys are so good that I feel like they could explain rocket science to a layperson in two minutes.
Basically, if you want to really understand how the tech you use every day actually works, get this book!!!
I recently purchased Swipe to Unlock ( edition) and am totally loving it. I highly recommend it!
I have been reading (and enjoying) Parth Detroja's organization strategy posts on LinkedIn for a while and while preparing for product management interviews, decide to buy the book.
The book is fun to read, but personally, what I truly loved was the business strategies explained around acquisitions.
I also come from an engineering background so while I'm already familiar with many technical concepts, it was fun to read their explanation for anyone who may not have a technical background.
If you are considering a career in technology, or product management (I'm obsessed about product management) or are interested in business/organization strategies and more - I would recommend this book!
I believe this book to only be useful to those not already working in the tech industry and are in no way interacting with popular tech news. This book is a "primer" in that if you have never heard of the topics or companies listed in the table of contents, it will provide you with only the most basic of understanding when you finish reading a chapter.
I tried to keep an open mind from beginning to end while reading this book, but was ultimately left underwhelmed and disappointed. While well intentioned, Swipe to Unlock reads like yet another book-as-a-business card piece of fluff that doesn't really provide value to readers with even the most basic understanding of today's tech industry.
Given the background of the authors, I expected a more in depth breakdown and analysis of the products and competitive landscape of the companies and events mentioned.
I'll give the authors credit creating easy to understand metaphors between older forms of business and their modern day tech counterparts and useful citations to do additional reading.
I have adopted this book for the Tech Law course that I teach at Oklahoma State University as a supplement to my book - The Legal Guide to Social Media. Students today will be working with technology regardless of their chosen career. This book provides an excellent base for understanding how technology works. While my course focuses on the legal aspects, this book fills in the gaps in students' knowledge. By understanding the "how" of technology, the risks and concerns of using technology (and the use of the internet) become more apparent. While I always make the point that law has not kept up with technology (my area of research), it is still important for those employed in the tech field (or any industry using technology) to be able to identify issues before they become problems. My course (which I previously taught at Washington State University for four years) covers online torts, intellectual property issues, privacy and data security, government regulations, and my predictions regarding the law of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality. This book is perfect for my purposes, especially as I have not had the opportunity to update mine to address new technology. While this is not a legal guide, I would recommend this to anyone wanting to better understand what is behind the page you see online, how searches work, the basics of data analytics, why tech companies acquire other businesses, and what an app on your phone really does.
